Stagmere changes hands: a new chapter for Northaw's great house

Stagmere, a grand stone manor house with tall chimneys, reflected in the still water of its lake at sunset

For centuries, Stagmere has been the house that Northaw grew up around. In 2024 the estate changed hands, and with it the title incorporated in its inheritance, which was transferred to the philanthropist Courtney Jordan.

Keep, restore, open

Courtney Jordan has vowed to keep the property, restore it and open it to the public by summer 2027. For a village whose daily life once revolved around the great estate, it is a chance to see the house properly for the first time.

Why it matters for Northaw

Walking through the village, you are walking in the shadow of Stagmere. Opening the house brings that story back into view, and visitors who come for the manor will find much more: a Tudor inn by the church, an ancient hornbeam wood and stories of kings, a hermit and a burning airship.
